Ethanol Purification Using Activated Natural Zeolite

Abstract: Bio-ethanol is
considered as a potential renewable energy fuels. However, ethanol in water
mixture has an azeotropic concentration at 95.6 wt.% which is difficult to be
further purified. The common method of purification is using azeotropic
distillation column which require an intensive energy and a specific solvent
addition. In this study the ethanol purification is done by adsorption column
packed with zeolite Raschig rings. The zeolite ring was modified using NaOH
solution to enhance the water adsorption performance of the material. The
ethanol purity can reach up to 99% by modified zeolite packing. The
modification also increase the saturation time of the packed bed column.
