Mapping of Bruise of Oil Palm Fresh Fruit Bunch during Loading and Transportation from Field to Mill

Abstract: The Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) integrity need to be maintained so the mill can eficiently reach less than 5% palm oil free fatty acid content. The physical treatments to FFB when loading to truck bin and transportation cause physical injuries. This research was aimed to map the fruit bruises, which can be used as a basis in managing FFB transportation. The physical injuries were indicated by Bruise Index (BI). The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with five replications. Research treatments were truck type (wood bin or steel bin), truck age (more and less than 5 years), and in truck bin FFB position (bottom, middle, top layer, front, center, rear). The result was descripted by graphical method and distinguished by statistical procedure. Data were analysed statistically with one way ANOVA. There were loosen fruit from bunches and bruise increase of more matured fruit loaded to truck bin. There were no bruise different for different FFB position in truck bin,i.e. between 1.97-2.07, but the FFB at middle position tend to bruise more. The fruit bruise tend to be higher when it transported by old truck (> 5years) rather than young truck.i.e. 2.01 compare to 1.82
